Diwali can be highly troublesome for those suffering from Asthma. City doctors have already started getting more patients complaining of breathlessness, severe cough and discomfort. Those between 6-12 years of age are more susceptible to asthma attack during diwali. Here are some self healing tips:

1) Avoid highly polluted areas.
2) Avoid sudden temperature change, physical stress and identify the source of allergy.
3) Monitor lung function regularly. Lung function usually decreases a couple of days prior to an asthma attack.
4) Try and sip a glass of fresh turmeric milk (haldi) with breakfast or anytime during the day.
5) If you exercise or go for a walk, make sure you do it after sunrise (after 7 a.m.) or in the late afternoons between 4.00 p.m and 7.00 p.m. Very early mornings and late evenings, smog descends lower in the atmosphere causing breathing difficulties.
6) Practice different Yoga forms everyday.
7) Do not forget to have your medications as given by your doctor in excitement and enthusiasm.
8) Avoid alcohol and smoking. These are bad for asthmatics anyway, but at this time, these are especially dangerous.

Role of homeopathy in Asthma

Homeopathy aims at strengthening the immune system. It has proved to be highly effective in dealing with acute attacks as well, prescription depending upon the indications.

Some of the commonly used remedies are:

1) Ipecac: For chronic asthma. It is used in older patients, and the attacks occur during midnight, when one is awakened with soreness and pain in the chest and heat in the head which improves with warmth. Especially useful in anaemic patients.

2) Antim tart: Presence of fine rattling or crackling sounds in the chest. Difficulty breathing and feeling of suffocation. Suitable for young children and the elderly.

3) Natrum mur: For general symptoms including a worsening of asthma on exposure to cold and dampness. Wheezing and breathing difficulties aggravated by exertion. Loose bowels after each attack.

4) Spongia tosta: For a barking cough and little mucus during an asthma attack.

5) Pulsatilla: If wheezing starts after eating rich food or you get too warm. Tightness in the chest which worsens during the evening and at night. Relieved by fresh, cool air. Coughing brings up yellow-coloured mucus.

6) Carbo vegitable: Helpful in a tense, constricted feeling in the lower part of the chest, with pressure in the stomach. Asthma attack brought about by gastric disturbances. Overindulgence in sweets, spicy food, stimulants and alcohol.
